History of Teesside Airport
Teesside International Airport has a rich history that dates back to World War II when it was opened as RAF Middleton St. George in 1941. During the war, it served as a bomber airfield, playing a significant role in RAF Bomber Command’s operations. Following the war, it continued to operate as an RAF base before transitioning to civilian use in the 1960s, becoming Teesside International Airport.
Over the years, Teesside has grown into a regional airport serving both commercial and general aviation, and it has gone through several name changes, including Durham Tees Valley Airport, before reverting to Teesside International. The airport has expanded its facilities and remains a key hub for regional flights and business aviation, offering a variety of services for both passengers and pilots.
AeroSchool Teesside
At AeroSchool Teesside, students benefit from training in a controlled airspace environment at a fully operational airport, offering an ideal setting for PPL (Private Pilot Licence) training and more advanced certifications such as Night Ratings and Instrument Ratings. Teesside’s instrument approaches provide an excellent opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience with instrument flying, while the airport’s mix of commercial and general aviation traffic ensures real-world exposure to ATC communications and complex airspace operations.
As part of their training at Teesside, students will also have the opportunity to fly into our other bases, including Breighton Airfield, where they can experience the challenges of operating in an uncontrolled airfield environment with a grass runway. This provides a well-rounded training experience, allowing students to develop skills for both controlled and uncontrolled environments, ensuring they become versatile and confident pilots.
Teesside’s long runway and modern amenities make it the perfect place to begin or continue your aviation journey.
Whether you're aiming for recreational flying or a professional career in aviation, AeroSchool Teesside provides a comprehensive training environment that prepares students for a wide range of real-world flying scenarios.
