The Instrument Rating (Restricted) (IR(R)) is an excellent upgrade for UK pilots looking to improve their flying skills and increase flight safety in challenging weather conditions. Formerly known as the UK IMC Rating, the IR(R) allows you to fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) in controlled airspace but with certain restrictions, making it a valuable addition for private pilots who want to fly more confidently in varied weather without completing the full Instrument Rating (IR) training.

Key Restrictions:
  • UK Airspace Only: The IR(R) is only valid in UK airspace, unlike the full IR, which allows for international instrument flight.

  • Controlled Airspace Limits: There are some limitations on the types of controlled airspace you can operate in, and certain complex airspace may still require a full IR.

  • Not for Commercial Use: The IR(R) is intended for private pilots and cannot be used for commercial operations or to meet the requirements for an ATPL or CPL.

  • The IR(R) typically has reduced approach minima over a full Instrument Rating (IR).

Steps to Obtain the Instrument Rating (Restricted) (IR(R)):
  1. Eligibility: You must hold a PPL or CPL to qualify for the IR(R). If you hold a LAPL, you will first need to upgrade to a PPL.

  2. Flight Training Requirements: You will need to complete a minimum of 15 hours of instrument flight training. This training typically covers:

    • Basic instrument flying skills.

    • Use of navigation aids (such as VOR, NDB, and GPS/GNSS).

    • Instrument approaches.

    • Simulated instrument conditions, such as flying in clouds or poor visibility.

  3. Theoretical Knowledge: The theoretical knowledge requirements for the IR(R) focus on understanding meteorology, instrument procedures, and air law related to IFR flight. You will need to pass a written exam that covers these topics.

  4. Skills Test: After completing the required training, you will need to pass a Skills Test. During the test, you will demonstrate your ability to:

    • Fly solely by reference to instruments.

    • Navigate using radio navigation aids.

    • Conduct instrument approaches.

    • Handle emergency procedures in instrument conditions.

  5. Medical Requirements: You will need to hold a Class 2 Medical Certificate (or Class 1 for commercial pilots) that is valid for IFR flight.

  6. Application to the UK CAA: Once you’ve completed your training and passed the skills test, you’ll apply to the UK CAA to have your IR(R) added to your PPL or CPL.
