History of Breighton Airfield
Breighton Airfield has a rich heritage dating back to World War II, when it was established as an RAF Bomber Command base. Built in 1942, it served as home to No. 78 Squadron RAF, which operated Handley Page Halifax bombers during the war. After the war, the airfield was closed to military operations and later repurposed for civilian use.
Today, Breighton is renowned for its vintage aircraft community, attracting aviation enthusiasts from around the region. The airfield is home to the Real Aeroplane Company, which restores and operates a collection of historic aircraft, adding to the airfield’s character and charm. The grass runway and its historical ambiance make Breighton a perfect destination for both casual flying and pilot training.
AeroSchool Breighton
AeroSchool Breighton offers a unique training environment that contrasts with our other bases by providing experience in an uncontrolled airspace and on a grass runway. This airfield is ideal for students looking to build versatility in their piloting skills.
As part of their flight training, students based at Breighton will also fly into our other bases at Teesside and Humberside, which are international airports. This allows students to gain valuable experience operating in controlled airspace, managing air traffic communications, and practicing instrument approaches—skills essential for a well-rounded pilot. The opportunity to train in both uncontrolled and controlled environments ensures that students graduate with confidence and competence in a variety of real-world scenarios.
With its close proximity to historical landmarks and scenic areas, Breighton is also perfect for scenic flights and aerobatic training. The vibrant community of vintage aircraft adds to the charm of the airfield, offering an immersive experience in both modern and historical aviation.
For those seeking practical training in a relaxed yet professional setting, AeroSchool Breighton is the ideal base to develop a well-rounded set of flying skills, particularly for pilots looking to practice uncontrolled airfield operations, before gaining the critical experience of flying in controlled airspace at our international bases.
